Arnold and Allene Trachte just got back from a 12-day trip to Alaska, something the husband and wife never would have dreamed possible this time last year. That's because Arnold Trachte used to suffer from extreme pain and fatigue.
“There's no way he would have been able to manage the trip before. It was fabulous we got to go,” Allene Trachte said.
It turns out Arnold Trachte's pain was from Lyme disease and his fatigue was from a condition an estimated 1 billion people suffer from worldwide – not enough vitamin D.
“I check vitamin D levels on every new patient and nine times out of 10, they are deficient,” said Teresa Holler, physician assistant at Victory Health Consultants who recently hosted a webinar on vitamin D deficiency. Holler said even in our beach community where more people than most are out getting vitamin D naturally through the sun, there is still a large percentage of us walking around with a vitamin D deficiency.
“People just think they are tired because they are getting older or because they have a lot of kids and they don't realize there's something wrong,” Holler said.
